Quentin Tarantino Collection

Quentin Tarantino Collection
£60.49

Collection of five films written and directed by Quentin Tarantino: Reservoir Dogs (1992), Jackie Brown (1997), Pulp Fiction (1994), Kill Bill Volumes 1 & 2 (2003-04). 'Reservoir Dogs' is set during the aftermath of a robbery which has gone violently wrong. Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Tim Roth and Steve Buscemi are amongst the stars making up the team of robbers, Mr White, Mr Blonde, Mr Orange and Mr Pink, who meet at a warehouse after the failed heist and attempt to work out who is to blame. In 'Jackie Brown', air stewardess Jackie Brown (Pam Grier) smuggles money on the side for gunrunner Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson). When she is caught with $50,000 and a consignment of cocaine, she makes a deal with Ordell: if convicted, she will not shop him as long as he pays her $100,000. Meanwhile Jackie also makes a deal with the cops, promising to help convict Ordell, and enlists the help of bail bond man Max Cherry (Robert Forster) in a daring attempt to outwit both the police and Ordell. 'Pulp Fiction' melds three dime-store stories set in lowlife LA into one cohesive thriller. Butch (Bruce Willis) is an over-the-hill boxer paid to take a fall, who instead does a runner with mobster Merselius's (Ving Rhames) money. Meanwhile, Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winfield (Jackson) are two hitmen who aren't having the easiest of mornings, and Pumpkin and Honey Bunny (Roth and Amanda Plummer) are two would-be bank robbers who are planning a heist in a restaurant. In 'Kill Bill: Volume 1', Uma Thurman stars as The Bride, one-fifth of a team of assassins called DiVAS. When she decides to get married and leave the outfit her boss, Bill (David Carradine), is not a happy man and gets her former colleagues to show up at the wedding; leaving behind a blood bath and The Bride shot in the head. Four years later, The Bride sets out on a journey of revenge. In 'Kill Bill: Volume 2', having dispensed with former colleagues O-Ren Ishii and Vernita Green in the first volume, The Bride (Thurman) resumes her quest for justice in this second installment of Tarantino's jaw-droppingly violent homage to action films from both East and West. The Bride now has two remaining foes on her 'Death List', Budd (Madsen) and Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah) - before she moves on to her ultimate goal - to kill Bill (Carradine).

Charlie (Harvey Keitel), the most responsible of the group, tries to protect his girlfriend's cousin, Johnny Boy (Robert De Niro), from the local debt collectors, but his young charge seems determined to live fast and die young. Heavily influenced by the French New Wave, 'Mean Streets' provided the first high-profile success for director Martin Scorsese and star De Niro. In 'Scarface' (1983), up-and-coming gangster Tony Montana (Al Pacino) arrives in Miami as a Cuban refugee. With his friend Manny (Stephen Bauer), Tony carries out a hit on a politician, earning him the gratitude of drug dealer Frank Lopez (Robert Loggia). Tony rises rapidly in the 'organization', but courts disaster when he becomes involved with Lopez's cocaine-addicted wife, Elvira (Michelle Pfeiffer). In 'Carlito's Way' (1993), Carlito (Pacino) is a Hispanic drugs boss just released from prison. Determined to go straight and move to the Bahamas with his girlfriend, Gail (Penelope Ann Miller), Carlito is tempted back to the wrong side of the law by his lawyer, nerdish coke-head David Kleinfeld (Sean Penn), for 'one last job'. Brian De Palma directs this visually eloquent film about a man's inevitable tragic demise with his familiar penchant for the big set piece and violent action. In 'Casino' (1995), Sam 'Ace' Rothstein (De Niro) is the mob's frontman for a billion dollar Las Vegas casino. The story begins in 1973; Ace falls for hooker Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone), while boyhood companion Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci) is appointed as his muscle at the club. In 'American Gangster' (2007), when his boss dies, underworld driver Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) seizes his chance and begins to build his own criminal empire. Utilising the bodies of dead US soldiers, Lucas begins importing heroin direct from South-East Asia, increasing purity on the street, and undercutting his rivals in one swoop. Before long he's amassed a fortune, bringing him to the attention of maverick policeman Ritchie Roberts (Russell Crowe), an honest cop in an otherwise corrupt force, who makes it his business to shut Lucas down. Finally, in 'Public Enemies' (2009), set in 1930s gangland America, Johnny Depp stars as the charismatic bank robber John Dillinger. Dillinger's audacious raids and subsequent jailbreaks thrilled the American public as their sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into Depression reached an all-time low. Despite his status as a folk hero, Dillinger was declared 'Public Enemy Number One' by J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) and became the prime target of Hoover's fledgling FBI, headed by Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale). Marion Cotillard co-stars as gangster's moll Billie Frechette.

The film traces the childhood love affair of Spyros and Eleni, two children from Odessa who grow up in a refugee encampment near Thessaloniki in the 1920 and 30s. As they grow up together, the two fall in love - but war is looming and difficult times lie ahead. The second film in the trilogy, The Dust of Time (2008), continues the love story of Spyros and Eleni (played in this instalment by Michel Piccoli and Irene Jacob). Willem Dafoe stars as A, the couple's son, an American-born filmmaker who sets out to make an autobiographical film charting his life story from the day he was born in 1953 until the present day. Sifting through long-buried memories, A drifts into a dream-like narrative that unfolds in the former Soviet Union, the Austrian-Hungarian borders, Italy and New York, and takes in historical events from Stalin's death to Nixon's resignation and the fall of the Greek junta.

A collection of five films directed by moviemaking duo Ethan and Joel Coen: Barton Fink (1991), The Big Lebowski (1997), Intolerable Cruelty (2003), Burn After Reading (2008), and A Serious Man (2009). In The Big Lebowski, Jeff 'the Dude' Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) is a bowling buff, laid-back to the point of horizontal, who gets mixed up in a blackmail plot involving a millionaire namesake. Roped into delivering the ransom to secure the release of the millionaire's kidnapped wife, the Dude's karmic balance is really put in a spin when his gun-toting buddy Walter (John Goodman) decides to help out. In Barton Fink, successful young playwright Barton Fink (John Turturro) goes to Hollywood. He immediately obtains a contract, only to develop writer's block when he discovers he is to write a wrestling movie for a faded 40s star. The Los Angeles heat, his dingy hotel and a noisy neighbour (John Goodman) combine to increase the pressure on him, and Barton begins to lose his grip on reality. In Intolerable Cruelty George Clooney stars as Miles Massey, a divorce lawyer who always wins his case until he comes head to head with the scheming, money-grabbing, yet alluring, Mrs Marilyn Rexroth (Catherine Zeta-Jones). Miles and Marilyn each embark on their own ruthless romantic missions to outdo one another and amass great wealth. Sparks fly in this battle-of-the-sexes comedy. Burn After Reading concerns the whereabouts of a sensitive disc containing the incriminating memoirs of alcoholic CIA agent Osbourne Cox (John Malkovich). Cox's wife, Katie (Tilda Swinton), who is having an affair with married federal marshall, Harry Pfarrer (George Clooney), is making plans to leave her husband, and is advised by her divorce lawyer to copy his personal files onto a disc. The disc finds its way via a circuitous route to the Hardbodies fitness gym, where two unscrupulous employees, Linda (Frances McDormand) and Chad (Brad Pitt) decide to exploit their find for all they can get. In A Serious Man, midwestern physics professor Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg)'s settled and secure life begins to spiral after his wife Judith (Sari Lennick) reveals she is leaving him for his arrogant associate Sy Ableman (Fred Melamed). Larry struggles to cope with the failure of his marriage and the unlikelihood of his unemployed brother Arthur (Richard Kind) getting a job and moving out of his house. At the same time, his son Danny (Aaron Wolff) is in trouble at school while his daughter Sarah (Jessica McManus) is stealing money from his wallet. As Judith and Sy begin to set up home together, poor Larry begins to receive anonymous letters from someone looking to ruin his chances of tenure at the university, while a failing student is trying to both bribe Larry and sue him for slander. In need of help, Larry seeks out the advice of three rabbis...

Robert De Niro Box Set

Five great performances from one of the best film actors of his generation. Includes the all-time greats Mean Streets (Scorsese, 1973) and Taxi Driver (Scorsese, 1976), as well as Cape Fear (Scorsese, 1991), Casino (Scorsese, 1995) and Sleepers (Levinson, 1996). In 'Mean Streets' (1973) four Italian-Americans from New York's lower East Side hang around at a local bar. Charlie (Harvey Keitel), the most responsible of the group, tries to protect his girlfriend's cousin Johnny Boy (Robert De Niro) from the local debt collectors but his young charge seems determined to live fast and die young. 'Taxi Driver' (1976) is the Groundbreaking portrayal of urban alienation, also directed by Scorsese. Vietnam veteran cabbie Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) is consumed with disgust at the 'filth' which surrounds him. His explosive, psychotic loathing eventually drives him to make an attempt on the life of a politician, and when it fails he turns his attention to saving a prostitute (Jodie Foster) from the clutches of her pimp. In 'Casino' (1995) Martin Scorsese once again casts Robert De Niro favourably as Sam 'Ace' Rothstein, the mob's frontman for a billion dollar Las Vegas casino. The story begins in 1973; Ace falls for hooker Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone), while boyhood companion Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci) is appointed as his muscle at the club. Over the years jealousies surface, erupting, ultimately in the destruction of Rothstein's empire. In 'Sleepers' (1996) we're taken to Sixties New York where four young boys, Lorenzo, Michael, John and Tommy, grow up in Hell's Kitchen, befriended by both the local priest and the gang boss. However, when a prank has near-fatal consequences the boys are sent to reform school, where they are sexually abused and beaten by a quartet of prison guards, an experience that marks the rest of their lives. In 'Cape Fear' (1991) De Niro is absolutely convincing as tattooed psychopath Max Cady. He's spent his 14-year prison term in bitterness against attorney Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte). Now he's been released and is out to destroy the already troubled home life of Bowden and his family.
