Independently made films are usually aimed at a niche audience as they are different from the mainstream Hollywood films, Sometimes known also as art films they follow their own style which usually includes elements of social realism and are usually about the characters thoughts and or dreams unlike the mainstream movies that usually follow a clear beginning, middle and end type of story.
Films that are mostly produced outside of a major film studio are also referred to as independent films. They are also distributed by subsidiaries of the major studios. For a film to be independent only a small percentage of the financing should come from a major studio.
The content and style of a film are also ways to differentiate between mass produced and independent films. Most of the time independent films will be on limited release and are designed especially for a select type of audience.
Independent film-making has increased over recent years and because of this backing from major studios for would-be film-makers is no longer needed. This is clear by the increasing number of low-budget films and short films that have been produced. Also the development of affordable digital cinematography cameras that can rival 35 mm film quality and simple computer editing software made it easier for the smaller production companies to compete with the mass market. The production of DVD’s and 3D technology has also paved the way for the independent film company too.
This all becomes extremely clear when you look closely at Quentin Tarantino’s movies you will begin to see similarities between all his films with regard to the way they are shot, actors used, references and phrases but to name a few.
