Independently made films are usually aimed at a niche audience as they are different from the mainstream Hollywood films, Sometimes known also as art films they follow their own style which usually includes elements of social realism and are usually about the characters thoughts and or dreams unlike the mainstream movies that usually follow a clear beginning, middle and end type of story.
Films that are mostly produced outside of a major film studio are also referred to as independent films. They are also distributed by subsidiaries of the major studios. For a film to be independent only a small percentage of the financing should come from a major studio.
